Updates to UMD ePortfolios: Portfolium Decommission

Electronic portfolios (ePortfolios) are a digital collection of evidence that includes text, files, links, and images that demonstrate an individual’s skill, competence, and experience. Portfolium is the current primary enterprise solution provided at the University of Maryland for ePortfolio functionality. An additional legacy solution called Canvas ePortfolio, built directly into the ELMS-Canvas Account page, is also available. Both of these solutions will soon be removed and replaced with a new tool called Canvas Portfolio.

On June 30, 2026, Instructure will retire Canvas ePortfolio and Portfolium. This change was announced by Instructure on October 22. At UMD, certain features related to these tools will no longer be available beginning January 6, 2026, and all functionality will be disabled by June.

  • On January 6, the Portfolium Course Assessment LTI assignment integration and the Portfolium link in Global Navigation will be removed.
  • Remaining features will be removed on a rolling basis; a timeline will be maintained and available to the UMD community until June 30, 2026.

The new Canvas Portfolio solution will be made available in ELMS-Canvas by the Division of IT as early as November 15 pending our initial testing. Our goal is to provide access as soon as possible to allow preparation for winter and spring terms while ensuring a consistent experience for the community. Canvas Portfolio features will include:

  • Institution-assigned portfolios for single or multi-course competency-based assessment
  • Student-created portfolios for showcasing accomplishments over time
  • Multi-course evidence collection with competency tagging
  • Export options so learners can keep their work after graduation

ePortfolios are often incorporated into coursework by instructors and are used by learners to collect and display work completed during their academic experiences. Instructors and students are encouraged to begin using the new Canvas Portfolio tool as soon as possible in order to become familiar with the features. The DIT Academic Technology and Innovation Learning Technology Strategy team will offer two informational sessions about the new tool on December 8, 2025 and January 23, 2026 that will include a short presentation/demo and the opportunity to ask questions. The sessions will not be recorded, but questions will be added to our knowledge base.

While Canvas Portfolio will provide the best experience for instructors and students using ELMS-Canvas, Adobe Portfolio is an alternative solution that is available as part of the Adobe Creative Cloud. Adobe Portfolio is a service for quickly and simply building a personalized website to showcase creative work.

Content that is in the current Portfolium and Canvas ePortfolio solutions will need to be exported and downloaded or saved by content owners by June 30, 2026 in order to prevent deletion. Instructure provides instructions in their community documentation:

Downloaded content can be re-uploaded to the new Canvas Portfolio tools if it is in the following compatible file formats: DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, PDF, TXT, XLS, XLSX, ODS, NUMBERS, JPG, JPEG, GIF, PNG, TTF, MP3, AAC, OGG.

DIT will begin broad scale communications to instructors and students within ELMS-Canvas and via email in mid-November 2025.
