On Thursday, July 16, the Division of IT updated the security certificate for the university wired and wireless networks. This means that university community members may need to install the new certificate on personally owned devices before they will connect to eduroam the next time. Additional details are below.
Effects on Personal Devices
Devices that Connect via Username/Password
After the changes are implemented, devices still utilizing username and password to authenticate to eduroam may prompt the user to 'Trust' or 'Accept' the updated certificate the next time they connect to the campus wireless network. Follow the on-screen prompts and trust or accept the certificate to ensure continued secure access to the campus network.
Devices that Connect via SecureW2 TLS Certificate
Personal devices onboarded through the SecureW2 tool at connect.umd.edu will need to be run through the setup process again. Doing so before the scheduled change will result in the least disruption.
If you try to reconnect from on-campus after the device is disconnected from the network, you will need to set up temporary internet access (such as umd-guest or a personal hotspot) before running the setup process.
Effects on University-Managed Devices
Windows devices enrolled in Intune, Mac devices managed by Jamf, and Linux hosts managed by DIT or local department administrators that use SecureW2 certificates for eduroam authentication will be updated centrally, and they should not prompt users to trust or accept the new certificate.
If a managed device has not been powered on and connected to the internet since July 9, 2026, the new certificates will not have been installed by UMD’s central device management platforms. That device could have issues getting connected to the network on campus after the change on July 16. To reconnect to eduroam, temporarily join the umd-guest network so that your device checks in with its central management platform and gets the new certificate or reach out to their departmental IT contact for assistance.
If you need assistance with getting connected after the change, please reach out to the IT Service Desk.
