New Classroom Feature Coming Fall 2025: Automated Classroom Recordings

For the past 14 years, Panopto has served as UMD’s enterprise-wide tool for recording synchronous and asynchronous video lectures within ELMS-Canvas. UMD research on the use of Panopto has shown that students use the tool to supplement their note taking, review lectures, and to assist with completing assignments. At the same time, we’ve heard from instructors that setting up Panopto at the beginning of class could be disruptive, potentially detracting from creating a welcoming instructional environment for students at the beginning of class.

In response to this feedback, we are thrilled to announce that instructors assigned to teach in the 48 General Purpose Classrooms during the Fall 2025 semester will now be able to pre-schedule classroom Panopto recordings in Canvas. It’s our hope that the “Recording Scheduler” tool will result in a seamless classroom recording experience, allowing for the class session to automatically begin recording at the start of scheduled class time.

This new classroom recording feature is made possible by integrations with multiple campus systems including Series 25 (25live), Panopto, Canvas, and classroom AV technologies, all of which have been redesigned to incorporate new types of recording hardware, customized to enhance your classroom technology experience.

Additional details will continue to be communicated to instructors assigned to the 48 General Purpose Classrooms, throughout the summer and prior to the start of the Fall 2025 semester.

Instructors are encouraged to participate in one of the classroom AV trainings scheduled for August 25 at 10 a.m. and August 28 at 1 p.m. Please sign up to attend.
