Upcoming UMD Passphrase Management Changes

The Division of IT is making the following changes to improve the security of your UMD account.

New Look for MFA Login Screens - August 1, 2022

The look and feel of the multi-factor authentication login screens (DUO) within the UMD Central Authentication Service (CAS) will change. See this support article for more information and to see a preview of the new screens.

Passphrase Management Changes - October 6, 2022

  • The security question feature used for passphrase resets will be retired. Recent guidance from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recognizes that security questions are not an adequate means of identity verification for resetting a passphrase.
  • The passphrase change page will become part of the self-service profile page. Therefore, you will need to successfully log in with your current passphrase and multi-factor authentication via DUO in order to set a new passphrase.
  • University community members will no longer be able to use an expired passphrase to set a new one. If you cannot log in, you will need to use your verified phone or contact the Service Desk to set a new passphrase.

These changes will improve security related to password management at the university. We appreciate your understanding.

If you have any questions, please contact the IT Service Desk.
