Beginning Monday, September 21, 2026, 2-Step authentication will be required in order to access University of Maryland TERPmail student email accounts.
TERPmail account holders can enroll in 2-Step authentication by following these setup instructions. Please do so as soon as possible.
Why is this required?
Strong passwords are an important part of keeping your accounts secure, but they are not enough. We have recently seen a large number of phishing attacks targeting student TERPmail accounts, and an additional layer of security is needed. With 2-Step authentication, anyone trying to access your account must provide two methods of identification:
- Something you know, like your passphrase
- Something you have, like a mobile device with the Google Authenticator app, a phone that can receive voice calls, or a security key
If you need help enrolling a device or enabling multi-factor authentication, please contact the IT Service Desk.
