Security, Privacy, Audit, Risk, and Compliance Services (SPARCS)

SPARCS is a newly established team within the Division of Information Technology that aims to enhance UMD's organizational integrity by safeguarding information, ensuring regulatory compliance, and mitigating risks.


Protecting UMD’s information systems from unauthorized access, breaches, and other threats to ensure confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data.

Ensuring that personal and sensitive information is handled in compliance with privacy laws and regulations, and safeguarding individuals’ rights to confidentiality.

Conducting systematic evaluations and reviews of information systems, processes, and controls to verify compliance with policies, regulations, and standards, and to identify areas for improvement.

Identifying, assessing, and managing potential risks that could potentially impact UMD’s information assets and operations, and developing strategies to mitigate those risks.

Ensuring adherence to relevant laws, regulations, and institutional policies to maintain legal and regulatory conformity and avoid potential penalties.
