Upcoming IT Service Changes and Interruptions

The Division of IT is making the following changes to improve the UMD’s IT services and the security of your account. Some could interrupt your access to services or require you to update device settings.

New Security Certificate for Eduroam - September 29, 2022

DIT will update the security certificate for the eduroam wireless network between 4 and 6 a.m. Thursday, September 29. You may need to install or accept the new certificate in order to connect to eduroam after the update. Some devices may present you with a security alert message, and others may be unable to connect to eduroam until the certificate is updated. If you have trouble connecting after the change, we recommend telling your device to forget the eduroam network and then visiting setup.wireless.umd.edu to reconnect to eduroam.

Passphrase Management Changes - October 6, 2022

  • The security question feature used for passphrase resets will be retired. Recent guidance from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recognizes that security questions are not an adequate means of identity verification for resetting a passphrase.
  • The passphrase change page will become part of the self-service profile page. Therefore, you will need to successfully log in with your current passphrase and multi-factor authentication via DUO in order to set a new passphrase.
  • University community members will no longer be able to use an expired passphrase to set a new one. If you cannot log in, you will need to use your verified phone or contact the Service Desk to set a new passphrase. To ensure you have the most flexibility with resetting your password, if you have not yet configured your verified phone, please consider doing so before October 6.

Database Server Upgrade - October 9, 2022

DIT will upgrade to the university’s core database servers on Sunday, October 9, 2022 between 6 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. causing the following services to be unavailable.

  • ProSAM
  • Financial Aid Web Portal

Although we do not anticipate issues accessing additional services during the outage, the performance of systems that are integrated with those listed above could be unexpectedly affected.

These changes are part of our ongoing effort to improve the reliability and security of IT services. They have been scheduled during off-peak usage hours to minimize impact. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience they may cause. If you have any questions, please contact the IT Service Desk.
