Take UMD’s GenAI Survey!

Are you a current undergraduate or graduate student at UMD? Do you currently serve as an instructional faculty or staff member? If so, check your inbox March 12-28 and complete our brief (5-10 minute) survey to tell us more about your experience using generative AI (GenAI) in academic contexts. The survey will ask you about your use, understanding, and concerns with GenAI, and your feedback will inform policy, academic guidelines, and best practices around using GenAI tools.

GenAI is rapidly transforming teaching and learning practices across higher education. UMD is a leader in this exciting new technology, and while it has the potential to address grand challenges, we also must anticipate its academic impact within our own academic community. As such, the voices of students and instructors are essential in shaping the policies and guidelines surrounding the implementation and uses of GenAI tools at UMD.

We reviewed existing survey instruments related to GenAI in higher education and found that the questions often lacked the tangible outcomes for which we were looking. So, we decided to create our own survey from scratch in collaboration with our partners in Institutional Research Planning and Assessment and the Division of Student Affairs. During the Fall 2023 semester, DIT Academic Technology Experience team members conducted a series of field interviews with students and instructional faculty/staff across campus designed to elicit the real-world GenAI-related questions and concerns. The result? The creation of a customized GenAI survey instrument directly informed by the concerns, questions, and outcomes from our very own UMD community members.
