Apartment Community Wi-Fi Upgrades in 2021

The Division of IT is upgrading Wi-Fi equipment in South Campus Commons, Graduate Hills, and Graduate Gardens apartments begininning in January 2021. We recognize that high-quality W-iFi is essential for remote learning during COVID-19, and we have worked over Winter Break to acquire equipment and make plans for these improvements. When complete, residents will experience the following enhancements:

  • Brand new wireless access points that support Wi-Fi 6
  • Increased wireless coverage and density
  • Increased bandwidth

This project reflects an investment of nearly $2 million and involves the installation of more than 2,100 new access points in 1,000+ apartments across the apartment communities. The work should improve connectivity for residents in those communities. At capacity, South Campus Commons, Graduate Hills, and Graduate Gardens can house more than 3,100 UMD students.

Residents will receive communication and instructions related to the upgrades from their building management companies. As always, if any UMD community member experiences issues with Wi-Fi connections on campus or with other IT services, they should contact the IT Service Desk.
