New University Data Privacy Policy

The university has a new Data Privacy Policy (Policy X-15.00(A)), which was approved by the University Senate and signed by President Pines at the end of December. The policy sets out the principles by which UMD interacts with individuals' data and the expectations that individuals can have in how the university uses their data. To read the policy and find out more, please visit the new data privacy program webpage.

The next step in incorporating the principles of the policy into our day-to-day scholarly, research, and administrative activities is to develop related standards to address issues, including how UMD shares information with third parties, how privacy and data risk is understood and calculated, and how decisions are made to use specific types of data. We strongly believe that the standards will be best developed in collaboration with UMD community members, so we are seeking volunteers to participate. To get involved, please email umd-privacy@umd.edu.
