Communities of Practice

Communities of Practice are groups of UMD professionals who share information, experiences, and ideas related to a particular IT topic in support of the university’s missions.

Active Communities of Practice

University Technology Coordinating Committee (UTCC)

UTCC's goal is to improve communication and increase collaboration among the various people and units responsible for providing IT support, infrastructure, and administrative services throughout the university. Focuses on IT issues that exist on the College Park campus, but maintains an awareness of how system-wide issues may affect campus. The Listserv list umd-tech-contacts@listserv.umd.edu is used to communicate with the committee. Information about upcoming meetings, agendas, and other items of interest are sent to this list. To join the list send email to listserv@listserv.umd.edu. The body of the message should include the following:

Classroom Support Operations

Forming Communities of Practice

Cloud

The Cloud Community of Practice is intended for those interested in the use of cloud-based systems, either as infrastructure (e.g., servers, networks in the cloud) or as services (e.g., pre-built Web services). Cloud vendors will include Amazon, Microsoft and others as interest dictates. The purpose of the group is to provide education through formal presentations, informal discussion and active sharing of information and methods, and to develop an enjoyable interconnected peer group interested in learning about all things cloud with low vendor egoism.

Data Management

The goal of the Data Management Community of Practice is to fulfill a key component of the IT Strategic Plan around Institutional Data Access and Management, consolidating functional and technical requirements for data and how data and information are managed across the organization.

IT Service Management

The IT Service Management Community of Practice seeks to establish ongoing opportunities to discuss and exchange knowledge relating to how IT services are delivered with a business lens focus, utilizing the IT Service Management methodology and all the various IT frameworks that exist.

Video, Streaming, and Lecture Capture

The Video, Streaming, and Lecture Capture Community of Practice connects campus professionals who deal with the capture, storage and serving of video content. There are many uses for video content from advertisement to flipping classrooms to grant proposal videos. This group can share best practices, expertise and resources to better serve the whole university.

Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure

The Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure Community of Practice welcomes managers of VMware, Citrix, and other Virtual Desktop Infrastructure solutions as well as any others looking to roll out VDI to streamline their management of pools of similar or identical desktops, especially in a variety of places on campus.

Web Hosting

The Web Hosting Community of Practice connects staff who either use or support users of Web hosting services on campus. One of the goals of this group will be to determine whether needs are being met by service providers on campus, and if not, how best to meet those needs.
