Some new Gmail features will be coming to all UMD Google and TERPmail accounts in August 2018! You can preview the new features in this overview video and by reading on!
New Gmail Features Available
The 2018 Gmail update includes more security features and integrates your Google Calendar, Google Keep, and Tasks with your Gmail to help you manage and navigate your busy inbox.
To begin using the new Gmail, click the gear icon and then click “Try the new University of Maryland, College Park Mail.”
Tasks Feature, Google Keep, and Calendar Integration
Google Tasks is a to-do list app that lets you create and manage a task until completion. You can set a date and add subtasks to be checked off. With this Gmail update, you can create a new task from scratch or start with an email right from your inbox instead of having to open the email first.
Google Keep is a note taking app that can help turn your thoughts into an organized, searchable database. You can add notes and reminders in Keep and create events on your Google Calendar, all within the updated Gmail. This aspect of the user interface can be toggled open or closed by clicking any of the three icons.
New Display, Calendar RSVP, and Snooze Feature
The default view displays clickable attachment icons from the mailbox, without having to open the email. By placing your cursor over an email, you will activate shortcuts to archive, delete, mark, snooze, and even RSVP to an Google Calendar invitation. Too much clutter? Try using Comfortable or Compact view.
The Snooze feature allows an email to be received again at a later date. Snoozing an email will schedule a reminder to your inbox and provide information about when it was initially snoozed. You can click the Snoozed label to see what you have currently snoozed.
Personal Assistance through Nudging and Recommendations
Gmail will identify important emails that may have been overlooked and will initiate a feature called Nudging to bring them to your attention. Gmail notifications can now be limited to emails Google identifies as “high priority.”
Gmail also recommends addresses to unsubscribe from based on inferences. If a sender has sent you hundreds of emails and most go unread and unanswered, Gmail may suggest unsubscribing.
New Security Features
The updated dangerous email warning is larger and simpler. The new confidential mode allows senders to set an email expiration date that deletes the message content. In confidentiality mode, you can revoke access to a message you sent and require the recipient to complete multi-factor authentication before opening an email.
Built-in Information Rights Management (IRM) is a new set of email control options. IRM gives you the ability to disable recipient actions such as forward, copy, download, and print messages.
These features are described as they functioned during the early adopters program and as they were communicated in Google announcements. They are subject to change before the new version of Gmail goes live in August. If you need assistance with your UMD Google or TERPmail account, please contact the IT Service Desk.
