Terrapin Tech quietly turned 11 years old in November 2017. The store has been a fixture on campus during that time. We’ve experienced a few changes over the years, but we’ve never strayed from our purpose: providing an on-campus spot for students to purchase good computers and fixing those computers if they break.
What do we do?
We pride ourselves on being a place where people can learn about technology. We believe that technology can be taught to anyone--customer or employee. For that reason, we prioritize friendliness and a will to help when hiring.
Terrapin Tech works exclusively with University of Maryland (UMD) students, faculty, and staff. Many people in UMD’s community are passionate about technology, and our on campus location means they can share their passion with us as they try out the newest gear we have to offer.
So, whether it’s helping a student select a computer to pursue their passion in video production or helping a faculty member pick a notebook that allows them to do statistical analysis on large data sets, it’s fun helping them decide.
Who are we?
Our staff is composed almost entirely of students who get on-the-job training. The workforce is split between sales and support roles. Our support staff have the opportunity to become Apple and Dell certified technicians. We’ve also spent a lot of time developing our own training material. New staff get access to a robust library of courses hosted on ELMS — some of which were written by senior students.
The natural cycle of students graduating means we get to regularly hire new staff. This is a great feature of working in a university: the continual refresh of new talent ensures we never get stuck in our ways. We are able to have staff keep asking why something is done a certain way and bring fresh ideas to solve old problems.
As manager of Terrapin Tech, I’m really proud of our student workers. They are the most important part of what makes Terrapin Tech successful. UMD is made up of some of the brightest people in the world, and I’m grateful to work with them. So many UMD students go on to do great things. The student employees of Terrapin Tech always leave a lasting impact on the store.
On February 28, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Terrapin Tech is hosting our first Terrapin Tech Expo in the Stamp Student Union. Students are welcome to join us in the Atrium on the first floor to discover new apps, tools, and products from DIT and tech companies. Try hands-on activities, ask questions, and win prizes!
Terrapin Tech is special in so many ways. We’re always showcasing new sales and events, so check out Terrapin Tech on the Web and stay in touch with us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Visit us in the first floor of McKeldin Library and check out our hours here.
